Rajasthan Diwas, the foundation day of India's largest state, is no longer celebrated on 30 March. The state government has shifted the celebration to Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, the first day of the Hindu New Year, which changes on the Gregorian calendar every year. In 2026, Rajasthan Diwas was celebrated on 19 March with a week of festivities, and going by the new tradition, the 2027 edition is expected to fall on 7 April 2027. For travellers, this is one of the best times to be in Jaipur, when the Pink City turns into an open-air stage of music, food and colour.
For decades, Rajasthan Day marked 30 March 1949, the day the princely states of Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner and Jaisalmer merged to form Greater Rajasthan. From 2025 onwards, the government decided to link the celebration to Chaitra Shukla Pratipada instead, the day that begins the Hindu New Year and Chaitra Navratri.
The idea behind the shift is cultural. The new date ties the state's formation to a day of renewal and new beginnings, which sits naturally with Rajasthan's traditions. It also means the date now moves each year with the Hindu calendar, so always check the current year's date before planning your trip.
Rajasthan as we know it did not appear overnight. Before independence, the region called Rajputana was a patchwork of princely states, 19 in all, along with smaller chiefships. After 1947, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel led a massive integration effort to unite them into one state.
The process moved in stages. It began on 17 March 1948 and reached its defining moment on 30 March 1949, when the four biggest states signed on and Greater Rajasthan was born. Jaipur was declared the capital on 7 September 1949, and the final reorganisation was completed on 1 November 1956.
Today, Rajasthan is India's largest state by area, spread over 3,42,239 square kilometres, and is administratively divided into 41 districts and 7 divisions. That number changed recently, so if you last read about 33 districts, your information needs an update.
Jaipur owns this festival like no other city. In 2026, the celebrations ran for nearly a week, from 14 to 19 March, and the scale keeps growing every year. Here is what you can typically expect:
The celebrations are not limited to Jaipur either. District headquarters across the state host their own programmes, and in 2026 the main state function was held in Jalore while Jaipur hosted the grand cultural evening.
If you are planning a Rajasthan trip in spring, timing it with Rajasthan Diwas is a smart move. Most cultural events are free or nominally priced, the weather is pleasant before the summer heat sets in, and the city is at its decorated best.
There is a bonus too. Since the festival now falls on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, it lands just before Gangaur, one of Jaipur's most beautiful traditional festivals, celebrated two days later. Plan a slightly longer stay and you can experience both, along with regular sightseeing at Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal and City Palace.
Rajasthan Diwas has evolved from a simple foundation-day ceremony into a week-long cultural carnival, and its new Hindu calendar date has only deepened its festive character. Whether you come for the folk music, the food or the fireworks over Jaipur's pink skyline, this is Rajasthan celebrating itself at full volume.
