For more than a decade, Alsisar Mahal in Rajasthan’s Shekhawati region provided the spectacular setting for the Magnetic Fields Festival. Launched in 2013, the boutique music and arts festival transformed the historic palace and its desert surroundings into a creative space for electronic music, contemporary art, wellness and cultural collaboration.
However, travellers should note that Magnetic Fields is no longer held at Alsisar Mahal. After completing ten editions at the venue, the organisers announced in September 2025 that they were ending this chapter of the festival’s journey.
Located in Alsisar village in Jhunjhunu district, Alsisar Mahal is a heritage property surrounded by the painted havelis and desert landscapes of Shekhawati. During the festival, its courtyards, terraces and outdoor areas were converted into stages and gathering spaces.
Visitors could stay inside the palace or choose specially arranged camping accommodation. The combination of historic architecture, desert sunsets and contemporary production gave the festival an identity that differed from conventional urban music events.
Magnetic Fields became known for presenting underground electronic music alongside Indian and international performers. Its programmes introduced audiences to established artists as well as emerging musicians working across different genres.
The festival was not limited to music. Previous editions included art installations, workshops, yoga, wellness sessions, rooftop stargazing, discussions and curated food experiences.
Collaborative projects such as Fieldlines brought electronic musicians together with artists representing Rajasthan’s folk traditions. These projects demonstrated how contemporary experimentation could engage thoughtfully with regional musical heritage.
The festival introduced a new generation of visitors to Alsisar and the wider Shekhawati region. Many attendees who travelled for the music also discovered local havelis, frescoes, crafts, food and hospitality.
Over time, Alsisar Mahal and Magnetic Fields became closely connected in the minds of festival followers. The unusual pairing of a heritage palace with experimental music helped the event gain recognition within India’s independent cultural landscape.
In 2025, the organisers officially bid farewell to Alsisar Mahal and announced a reimagined event called Magnetic Fields Nomads. Its inaugural edition took place from 13 to 15 February 2026 at Abheygarh in Khetri, Rajasthan.
Although the festival has moved forward under a different format and at a new location, its decade at Alsisar Mahal remains an important part of its history.
